A belief which became popular for a short while, was the efficacy of prayer for healing others, and for us SRF'ers in particular, we have the 'SRF World Wide Prayer Circle', which probably sprung up to gain attention from the craze. You may have wondered why the idea fizzled out in resent years; that's because the results have been rolling in from the long term studies, and they're not good, which really shouldn't be any surprise.

Here's the results of a decade-long study that's just...

I have to vent. Excuse me.

We wasted our lives by not living them, by closing ourselves off from life itself for some ambiguous bliss promised by dead yogis. Our children grew up and moved away. Our youth fled. We missed it all in meditation. We never lifted a finger to help our communities, to feed the poor, to reach out a hand to anyone but other devotees. We served DEVOTEES. Convocation was nothing but self-service to DEVOTEES. Every single event is for DEVOTEES....

Some months ago I met a group of very wealthy devotees who said they were contributing significantly to SRF, in the millions. When I heard that cutbacks for all departments would approach 40% for this year, I started asking myself, where does all the money go? Is there any accountability for our donations? I hate to think that someone at Mother Center could be siphoning off the funds and putting them into a private account, but that possibility needs to be addressed. If this is the case, it...

Most people out in the real world, as SRF like to call it, don't know about the extent of mismanagement and financial waste going on inside SRF. A common thread here is the Peoplesoft fiasco discussed on this board. It has cost SRF upwards of $14 million at this point, all to replace an accounting system costing less than $10,000 a year. Incompetent people trying to fix these things just make them worse.

SRF had originally...

Waste is a relative thing and in the eyes of the beholder. To some keeping down expenses so that they can provide employees with fair salaries and things like a retirement and 401K plan might be a goal. So some of these large expenses, like paying an accounting consultant $350,000 a year, might seem like a waste.

To others spending money on accounting systems, no matter the cost, so that they can use these systems to control the organization is worth the money.
8+ Million for an accounting system? How much did the Lake Shrine project cost? Why hasnt the membership heard of this? I thought the Lake Shrine temple cost us about $5 million and there were VL appeals, a video, and letters asking for help and support. They kept us somewhat informed due to the size of the expenditure (I thought that was the reason). Is SRF planning on a VL story about the new system?

A note by someone named "Dakota" pointed out something I have been wondering about for a while. SRF is busy publishing works by it's president while there are still works by Yogananda which are unpublished. There are even new edits of Yogananda's lessons which have been unpublished, yet finished, for years and years and years. These include the completed Italian lessons and English language lessons. Why is this? Why are their priorities so goofy? Do they think we would rather...

A standard joke is the "peoplesoft accounting project". How common is the knowledge of it out there? This is an accounting system they have spent 8+ million on so far, some folks say more. (To be fair this amount is only a rumor, I have not seen them write the checks!) I don't know exactly what it replaced but I believe it was a dinky PC based product like Microsoft Money or something.
I have heard very specific concerns about SRF being "taken in" by outside consultants. I worry about this, because in my business I see this happen all the time. If seasoned professionals and large corporations have this problem, why should we think SRF wouldn't? The biggest difference is that SRF has no watchdog or oversight function. A "normal" Board of Directors is made up of experienced professionals who are not part of the organization, for this very reason. The risk...
